Why the Smallest Countertop Dishwasher May Not Fit Your Kitchen
· NookPrep Editorial Team

The smallest dishwasher can still steal your only useful counter space. A narrow body helps, but an open door, a blocked tank opening or a dinner plate that will not fit can undo the advantage. Among the three examples below, Hermitlux and HAVA have the smaller closed bases; Danby is lower in height but substantially wider and deeper.
If you are searching for the smallest countertop dishwasher, start with the measurement your kitchen cannot compromise on. This guide compares the footprints, explains the model-specific catches, and gives you a practical fit check before you buy.
Research-based fit reviews using manufacturer documentation, not hands-on cleaning tests. These are three illustrative models, not proof of the smallest dishwasher on the entire market. Confirm specifications for the exact unit and region before ordering.
Hermitlux HMX-DW03 and HAVA R01 occupy roughly a 17 × 17-inch area before connections and clearance.
The Danby example has a lower body, but you must be able to spare its larger base.
An angled maximum does not mean a whole rack of oversized plates fits upright.
Compare the closed footprint before the marketing label
Dimensions below come from the linked manufacturer pages. Centimeter conversions and base areas are calculated from the displayed inch values and rounded; they are not NookPrep physical measurements.
| Model | Published exterior size | Closed base area | Fit question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hermitlux HMX-DW03 | 16.85 × 16.73 × 18.03 in ≈42.8 × 42.5 × 45.8 cm | ≈282 sq in | Will angled plate loading work for your actual dishes? |
| HAVA R01 | 16.9 W × 16.9 D × 18.1 H in ≈42.9 × 42.9 × 46.0 cm | ≈286 sq in | Can the door open, and can you reach the top fill opening? |
| Danby DDW631SDB | 21.65 W × 20.65 D × 17.25 H in ≈55.0 × 52.5 × 43.8 cm | ≈447 sq in | Is lower height worth giving up more worktop? |
Sources: Hermitlux, HAVA and Danby. Hermitlux’s text lists its three dimensions without labeling width versus depth; the first two form the base used here. Confirm their orientation in the exact model’s dimension drawing if your space is tight. HAVA values follow its product page; its separate FAQ uses slightly different figures.
What those numbers change in a real kitchen
Using those listed base dimensions, the HAVA example occupies about 36% less closed-base area than the Danby: 16.9 × 16.9 versus 21.65 × 20.65 inches. That calculation excludes hoses, the open door and operating clearances. It is a footprint comparison, not a claim that you recover 36% of your entire counter or get equal capacity.
A small width saving is valuable only if the leftover strip is usable. A cutting board may need one uninterrupted area rather than narrow gaps on both sides of an appliance. Put your board, kettle and drying items in their normal places, then choose where the dishwasher could live without constant reshuffling.

Three fit reviews: why we would consider—or skip—each one
Hermitlux HMX-DW03 gives you a compact base, with a loading caveat
Consider it for: a tight worktop where both base dimensions matter. Hermitlux lists a 5 L tank and faucet mode, a four-place-setting capacity, and dishes up to 12 inches when positioned at an angle. Those are manufacturer claims, not our measured capacity results.
The useful trade-off: a compact exterior and a larger advertised plate diameter may appeal to someone trying to keep dinner plates in the dishwasher rather than the sink. But the angle is part of the specification. It does not establish how many such plates fit together or how much room remains for cups and deep bowls.
Skip or investigate further if: a particular oversized plate must fit every day. Ask the seller for the rack arrangement with your plate diameter and shape. Do not compare the “four-place-setting” label directly with another brand’s number without examining what each includes.
HAVA R01 makes the open-door problem easy to see
Consider it for: a roughly 17-inch-square counter location where you can also provide loading and fill access. HAVA’s product page lists an open-door length of about 29.2 inches (74 cm), considerably greater than the closed depth. The product image below makes that extension visible.
The useful trade-off: the small base lets you investigate a location that would exclude a wider countertop appliance. The catch is everything around it: the door needs a clear path, you need somewhere to stand, and a top-fill opening must remain accessible. Never treat the closed dimensions as the complete installation envelope.
Check this before buying for large plates: HAVA’s product-page Q&A gives 10.2 inches upright and 10.6 inches angled; its separate FAQ states up to 11 inches angled. We have not resolved that discrepancy through testing. Use the more conservative product-page limit for initial screening and obtain confirmation for the exact unit if plate fit is decisive.
Skip or investigate further if: your plan depends on loading 11–12-inch dinner plates, squeezing under an almost touching cabinet, or filling the tank where a jug cannot tilt. Those are practical deal-breakers that an extra wash mode cannot fix.

If your decision is specifically between HAVA models, our HAVA R01 vs R09 comparison covers the model-level differences. Confirm the current manufacturer’s guidance when a dimension or plate limit is critical.
Danby DDW631SDB trades more counter area for a lower body
Consider it for: a wider worktop below lower cabinets. Danby lists a 17.25-inch body height and six-place-setting capacity, with a faucet quick connection. The lower body could help where the two taller examples fail, but the wider, deeper base demands a different location.
The useful trade-off: this is a reminder to optimize for your limiting dimension. If height is the barrier, a very small base does not help. If the worktop is the barrier, a shorter appliance does not make the larger footprint disappear.
Skip or investigate further if: the width would consume your only prep zone, or the faucet compatibility is uncertain. Read the DDW631-series installation manual for the connection requirements; a general claim about fitting under cabinets is not a measurement of your kitchen.
Measure the working setup in this order
- Mark width and closed depth. Tape the outline on the intended worktop without moving your normal kitchen items away. Use appliance dimensions, not shipping-box dimensions.
- Check the lowest overhead obstruction. Measure to the underside of cabinets, trim and lights. Account for the model’s required clearance rather than aiming for a zero-gap fit.
- Open the imaginary door. Use the manufacturer’s open-door dimension and check nearby drawers, handles, sink edges and your standing position.
- Rehearse filling. With an empty jug, check whether you can reach and pour into the planned opening without pulling the dishwasher forward.
- Trace both hoses and the power route. Verify permitted lengths, routing and drain height in the exact manual. A nearby sink is not enough if the route cannot be arranged correctly.
- Measure your largest everyday dishes. Include rims and non-round shapes, and check whether the stated maximum assumes angled loading or a changed rack arrangement.
- Walk through a normal meal. Can you chop, plate food, load dishes and open the refrigerator without shifting the appliance? That is the space-saving result you actually need.

Questions worth settling before you order
Does a water tank mean I can put it anywhere?
No. A tank changes how clean water enters the machine; it does not remove the need for a suitable surface, drainage, electricity or access. Compare the daily routine in our tank vs faucet setup guide.
Can I use a US model in Europe?
Do not assume so. Check the exact regional model, voltage, frequency, plug and warranty. Hermitlux’s cited US page lists 120 V/60 Hz; HAVA distinguishes American and European electrical versions. A matching model name or converted centimeter measurement does not establish electrical compatibility.
Which of these cleans best?
This evidence does not establish that. The comparison evaluates documented fit and setup constraints. Wash-cycle names, product photos and exterior size cannot substitute for a controlled cleaning test.
Choose the smallest setup that solves your actual problem
For a tight base area, investigate Hermitlux HMX-DW03 and HAVA R01. For low overhead clearance, examine Danby DDW631SDB if the larger base is acceptable. For oversized dishes, resolve rack fit before making any choice.
