HAVA R01 vs R09 — Which Upgrades Will You Actually Use?
· NookPrep Editorial Team

The HAVA R09 adds a water softener, a revised rack, and scheduling features, but that does not automatically make it the right dishwasher for your kitchen. The R01 remains worth considering if those extras solve no particular problem for you. This comparison helps you decide what deserves your money—and what to check before either machine earns a permanent spot beside your sink. HAVA model comparison
This is a research-based comparison of manufacturer documentation, not a hands-on test. Our recommendations are editorial judgments; cleaning, drying, reliability, and real-world load capacity have not been independently measured by NookPrep.
The quick decision
Its extras make the clearest case when you can name the specific frustration they address.
If the extra R09 features add little value for your routine, the R01 is the simpler comparison point.
Confirm physical fit before treating either model as the right purchase.
A useful question is: “What would I do differently every day with the more expensive option?” If your answer is vague, a longer feature list is not yet a reason to spend more.

Does the water softener solve your problem?
HAVA documents a salt-operated softener on the R09, with a setting matched to local water hardness. Follow the exact unit’s instructions for commissioning and refilling it. The manufacturer specifies dishwasher salt rather than kitchen salt. R09 product documentation
Our buying judgment: establish your water conditions before treating this as an essential upgrade. A feature is more valuable when it addresses a known constraint than when it merely sounds reassuring.
Ask yourself three questions:
- Do you already know the hardness of the water that will fill this appliance?
- Is water treatment already part of your home’s setup?
- Are you willing to follow another maintenance routine?
If the answer to the first question is “I don’t know,” find that out before attaching a monetary value to the feature. If you already have suitable treatment, consider whether you need another layer. We cannot quantify the benefit for your home without knowing those conditions.
For either machine, maintenance belongs in the ownership decision. HAVA’s FAQ calls for checking and cleaning relevant components; it does not describe the newer model as maintenance-free. HAVA FAQ
Will your actual dishes fit?

Start with your least cooperative everyday item: the wide dinner plate, deep cereal bowl, or tall mug you reach for most often. A dishwasher that suits an idealized place setting may still be inconvenient for your habits.
HAVA’s current model pages do not give the same angled-plate limit for both models. The R01 page lists plates up to about 10.2 inches upright and about 10.8 inches angled. The R09 page lists about 10.2 inches upright and up to about 10.6 inches angled, with the larger angled arrangement limited to one or two plates. HAVA’s general FAQ, however, says both the R01 and R09 can fit plates up to 11 inches when angled. Because those published figures do not fully agree, confirm fit for your exact model and plate shape instead of relying on the largest number. R01 specifications, R09 specifications, HAVA FAQ
Before buying, photograph a representative meal’s dishes together. Include everything you want washed in that same load. Ask the seller to assess that combination, rather than asking only whether one plate can fit.
Also decide what you are happy to keep washing by hand. If your main frustration is oversized cookware, small tableware capacity may not address the chore you most want to remove. We would settle that question before comparing additional wash modes.
Measure the working space, not just the closed box

The R01 product page also lists roughly 29.2 inches of depth with the door open. Do not apply that figure to the R09 without model-specific confirmation. HAVA R01 dimensions
Make a simple sketch of the proposed position. Mark the sink, cabinet edge, nearest socket, and where you stand to load dishes. Then check:
- Closed position: Does the machine leave useful food-preparation space?
- Loading position: Can you stand in front of the open door comfortably?
- Filling position: Can you reach and pour into the tank without an awkward lift?
- Hose position: Can the hoses follow the route required by the model’s instructions?
- Storage position: If you intend to put it away, is that a realistic routine?
Do not plan around an exact-fit cabinet gap using rounded sales-page dimensions. Seek the complete clearance requirements before ordering.
This is where our recommendation becomes personal: imagine loading the appliance after a tiring evening. If using it requires rearranging half the kitchen, resolve the layout first. No extra button fixes an inconvenient location.

Tank filling does not eliminate the drain
Both models offer manual filling and an inlet connection. HAVA’s general FAQ also describes wastewater drainage through a hose. A tank removes dependence on a faucet for incoming water; it does not remove the need to manage outgoing water. HAVA FAQ
We would avoid deciding this comparison on “no hookup” alone. First work out which filling routine you prefer, then evaluate model-specific features.
If water supply is still your main question, our water tank versus faucet hookup guide covers that separate decision. This article’s purpose is to help you choose between the two HAVA models once the basic setup makes sense.
More programs do not prove better cleaning
HAVA’s R09 documentation includes ECO, Glass, and Self-Clean programs. Their presence describes available controls, not a measured victory over the R01. R09 program specifications
Choose features by how you expect to use them. Someone who wants the same straightforward routine each evening may put little value on extra choices. Someone with a specific scheduling need may value a timer considerably more.
We have not run identical dirty loads through these machines. We therefore cannot tell you that the R09 cleans a certain percentage better, dries plastics more thoroughly, lasts longer, or delivers a particular annual saving.
That limitation should affect how you read the verdict. We can compare documented capabilities and identify useful questions. We cannot turn a specification advantage into a test result.
US and European buyers need different checks
HAVA distinguishes US and European electrical versions. Its warranty documentation identifies 110–120 V / 60 Hz for the US model and 220–240 V / 50 Hz for the European model. Match the unit’s rating label and plug to its intended market. HAVA warranty and electrical conditions
There are also differences in published program information. The European R09 page lists a 68-minute ECO program, while the US page lists 59 minutes. We do not treat one region’s program table as universal. European R09 information, US R09 information
Before checkout, confirm the exact regional version, delivery destination, fittings, and seller support. A product page existing in Europe does not establish availability in every country, and a US listing should not be treated as the default purchase route for a European reader.
We have omitted projected electricity savings. Comparing those responsibly would require matching test conditions and your local tariff, not just reading a marketing efficiency claim.
Compare the cost of being wrong, too
A small price difference can be outweighed by an unsuitable purchase. Read the return conditions for the actual seller before ordering, especially when plate fit or cabinet clearance is uncertain.
HAVA’s direct-store return page contains both a 30-day return statement and a requirement to request a return within 14 days. It also describes restrictions and charges for non-defective returns. Ask the seller to clarify applicable terms; do not assume a risk-free home trial or transfer those conditions to an Amazon purchase. HAVA direct-store return terms
Keep the invoice and establish where support will come from. HAVA’s warranty is limited and includes conditions on eligible purchases and shipping costs. HAVA warranty
Our approach would be to compare the delivered price only after confirming fit, seller identity, and the return route. That makes the price comparison about two usable purchases, rather than two attractive listings.
Which one should you choose?

Choose the R09 when you can connect its extras to a specific need. The upgrade case should be concrete enough to explain in one sentence.
Choose the R01 when the simpler option meets your requirements and the actual price difference matters to your budget. There is no need to buy unused capabilities for reassurance.
Keep shopping when neither passes your fit checks. Our EUHOMY countertop dishwasher review offers another model to evaluate; it is not an automatic substitute or a claim that EUHOMY performs better.
If you already own a working R01, set a higher bar for replacement. Write down the problem your current appliance leaves unresolved, what evidence shows the R09 would address it, and the total replacement cost. Without a clear answer, postponing an upgrade is a reasonable decision.
